For my last blog of my sophomore writing class I chose the collaborative proposal: “Commercialization of Christmas”. I noticed that this groups’ argument is that Christmas has lost all its original values. They state that Christmas has transformed into a holiday of greed and superficiality, instead of being a celebration of the birth of our Savior. People are more interested in the giving and spending part of it and they don’t focus on the real beauty of the holiday that is love and compassion.

Furthermore, I think this group uses pathos and ethos to come across their statement. They start their essay by describing a Christmas morning, by doing this they engage the reader into something that is familiar to them the feeling of that holiday. They further on describe how you can still do your holiday traditions but to also include and remember that Jesus was born on that day. They also make an allusion to Saint Nicholas and explain the background of the famous figure and how in modern days it is summed up to a guy that lives in the North Pole. Saint Nicholas was a giving person and they explain how business owners commercialize “Santa Claus”. This group was effective in delivering their message using the means of history and emotions.

Finally, this collaborative proposal had an effective approach to their claim of Christmas commercialization. I found myself reading and agreeing too many of their statements. One thing I found interesting that there is a slight contradiction in the essay. One group member talks about Jesus and how Santa Claus has taken His place, then another group member talks about St. Nicholas as a very good man and we should follow his footsteps. I believe there should be a better transition between what they were trying to prove. After I read it I concluded that Christmas meaning has been lost through time, but I would have liked to have a unison essay where they spoke about the alteration of the holiday or the alteration of Santa Claus. Overall I rate this essay with 8 out of 10.

This paper is kind of complex, but in the same time is interesting because we have learned about different concepts and thoughts about the crimes and criminals. Personally, I think that the progress in this paper is going well with different ideas and concepts that everyone is providing with to the group.

In general, I have investigated and written the part of my paper that is about crime in general, why criminals commit crimes or what they are looking for in their victims. It is very interesting to introduce this part in the paper because you can know a little more of the thoughts and ideas my group have and is an excellent way to see how my group  is trying to persuade and argue the reasons of their  investigation on the criminality levels on campus. I think this part is principal for the introduction and the development of the paper in general.

Also, my other teammates have been working hard in their research and different investigations for the paper with the TCU Police, interviews with many people on campus, opinions, and different investigation of crime that had happened on TCU. Everyone is working hard to set up this paper with the different outlines and research material that each of the teammates have provided.

Collaborative Proposal

December 10, 2009

I feel that this paper is interesting and different from all papers I have done between my freshman and sophomore year. Our topic is about the “discrimination” involving the users of the Froggy 5.0 in TCU Campus.  We think TCU should protect all students because security should be equal to all. Our main point is to prevent the violence that is affecting TCU Campus and the residents.

We chose this topic because we think that TCU may provide more safety and decrease violent acts such as, robbery or sexual assault by a large margin. TCU is focusing right now only in women, we think that all students independently if they are male or female should have the right to have protection form violent acts. We are planning to execute this project with different interviews and investigations about delinquent acts that have affected people; especially TCU students.

We have different investigative trails to follow. For instance, we need to investigate different crimes, the criminals Modus Operandi and also include general opinions and interviews to many people who can influence this paper. Using all of these means we will encounter a solution to the upheaval in criminal activities in the TCU Campus. Furthermost, we believe that the diverse research will lead to an answer to this very serious and preoccupying situation for male students concerned with their safety.

PAPER #4

Mistreatment of Women:

I think tha20080517000733-mujert this issue is very common in our society, controversial and it has many points that we can discuss trying to look for many solutions in our paper four. Mistreatment of women is a problem that each man needs to fix and find a solution to end this problem that is affecting the society for many years. The principal people who are affecting with this issue are the women that do not need to have this treatment from anybody much less from men. My target audience will be men that support these ideologies as well as men that have problem with these issue and want to go out of this looking for help. There are some strategies that we can work. For example, we can work with surveys and investigations of cases that make think to the men that want to hit or say something that can hurt to a woman. I think that we can start with these two methods as well as introduce more with ideas of my classmates. Also, we can use videos of people who have confessed about this problem in their life that have been affected physical and psychologically. I think with the ideas that the classmates that will be participating in this paper will get an effective rhetoric document that can make think many people about this issue and how we can control this problem.

Young Pregnant:

I think that this issue is also frequent in our society, it is controversial and have many ideas that everybody want to 4given to argue for many solutions in the paper four. Young pregnant is a theme very delicate that involve many issues because of not take care of themselves (I am including man and woman because the baby is not doing just by the woman). The target audience will be the young people who think that do not have enough responsibility to take care of a baby. Carelessness in this theme will be focused in the family because the parents must teach to their children to take care of this. There are some strategies that we can work; for instance, the surveys and the investigations of cases of young people who have babies. Also, we can introduce many cases that TV stations had made investigations about this theme. Finally, we can research many articles about this issue in how it affects the life, not only of the woman, but the family and the same baby because the baby can be born with defects. I think that these ideas and many ideas of the classmates we can work in an effective rhetoric document that can make to many young people think about the consequences before make a mistake that will be complicated in their life.

Ideologies of Jamison Green

November 9, 2009

"Thinking Gender"For me, is very difficult to match with one of these people who are rhetorician in different situations and methods to express what they feel or think. However, I think that I can have a connection in many points of thoughts with Jamison Green, author of the book “Becoming a Visible Man”. Jamison Green wrote many deep concepts about transgender people and the kind of life that they need to live in the world. The different thoughts that he wrote are the ideology and stereotype that many people have of the homosexual or transgender. At this point, I share many ideas that Green exposed in his book; for instance, “He is sick,” “She is crazy,” “They don’t know what they are doing with their lives”. The people do not know the type of discriminations that these people have in their lives. It is unfair that criticize to these people because of their thoughts, culture and moral ideas are arguments to marginalized to these humans.

Also, the respect and acceptance are facts that these people need from each person who is around of them. These two specific values are very important points that Jamison Green is focusing in his book because they are not an uncommon objects out of this world, they deserve respect of everybody. I agree with this point of these ideologies that Green has because every person needs respect from others. The judgments of the people who criticize and generalized each person about the stereotypes should be changed because constantly we talk and interact with a diversity of people and show respect to them.

Jamison Green taught many points that as I was reading; I was feeling and touching a little bit of his life. It is really sad that the ignorance of many people make suffer other humans because they do not life the same “type of live” that they have. For instance, when Jamison Green wrote about he talked with one man about once in a hospital the guy was discriminated because in his record stated that he was a transsexual; consequently, someone wrote in his medical record in bold red ink “TRANSSEXUAL” I was concerned because in something that everybody use and very important as is the health care system; a doctor or a person criticize and discriminate you because you are not the same person who they frequently see and care everyday. I know that they must have care of the person who they are seeing, but not discriminate the person who is taking care of.

I feel and think that I have connected with many ideas and points that Jamison Green is giving in his book “Becoming a Visible Man”. Is very important that everybody know that we need to have tolerance, respect and acceptance with these people as well as understand them the reason of why they have these feeling. We need an open mind when we want to talk and criticize to these people because our judgments can hurt to someone.

Student-Athlete

Foreigners in Unted States

Spicy Food

Swimming – interview many swimmer about swimmer’s life as student-athlete.

Foreign in United States of America – interview many foreigners about how do they feel in United States of America and what are the differences of their countries and here.

Spicy food – interview many foreigners about how do they feel about spicy food in Texas.

Sport Columnist, Mr. Bienvenido BrownIn newspapers, magazines, documentary films or video clips have different types of effective rhetorician who has been affecting to the audience with the investigations, comments or knowledge of influence when they write about something. In my personal opinion, I have many effective rhetoricians, but an effective rhetorician that I think who has different methods than others writers, in this case newspaper, is Mr. Bienvenido Brown.

Mr. Brown is a columnist writer in a Panama’s newspaper called “La Estrella de Panamá.” The columns in the sport segment “Cocktail Deportivo” talks about different opinions, analysis, and problems of sports that different Panama’s Federations can solve to improve their activities in the country. In his rhetorical columns he uses intensive logos, ethos and pathos to influence, inform, persuade and clarify doubts to the audience about the sports in the country. When I say that are “intensive” is because of the authority and credibility in his opinions, knowledge and investigations in his columns analyzing and persuading directly to the audience about the topic that he is writing. For instance, in the newspaper on Monday 10, 2009 Mr. Brown talks about the investigations that he made about the Bolivarian Games’ controversy. He uses his knowledge of sports in how will be affected the athletes if they will not go to these games as well as the authority and trustworthiness in talk about this topic because he was an athlete. Also, he uses different investigations with specific details that are useful to persuade to the audience who read the columns.

The contributions of his columns about type of his thoughts and knowledge about sports make me reflect, understand and analyze more about what he is writing. These analyses that I make are more specific because of details that he gives me in his columns are very precise and credible for me. In my opinion, the person who is reading the column can get more knowledge through the analysis of Mr. Brown and the analysis that the person makes by himself.

Certainly, Mr. Bienvenido Brown has good methods to introduce his knowledge and thoughts of sports to the audience. These writing can produce an effective collaborative proposal that can change to the audience who read his columns because he gives with specific details and terms which are focusing in the controversy, the possible guilty people of the problem and the consequences that these problems are causing or will provoke. In fact, the columns can change the mind of the audience depending of the knowledge, thoughts and beliefs of the individuals; in other words, the columns can be easier to change the mind of the audience if they have wrong opinions about the sport which they like.

In summary, good facts, specific details and opinions, and the analysis of the writer are the results of a good analysis of the reader. Also, the change of mind should be a connection in the topic about the interest and influence that has the writer in the reader. I think Mr. Brown has these specifications to influence and persuade in the sport’s audience in Panama.

Transsexual controversy

October 8, 2009

Transgender

Katelynn - Transgender in the reality show "Real World Brooklyn"

The world has evolved with the existence of a diversity of people that have many choices in regards with, culture, religion, and gender role. Technology advancement and acceptance of a person in regards with their sexual identification plays an important role in transsexual experiences.

Jamison Green, author of the book “Becoming a Visible Man”, wrote deep concepts about transgender people and the kind of life they need to live including holding up discrimination of as well as opinions people might have.

Jamison Green was very specific in his standpoint about the right and wrong of this subject, which is usually a very controversial and hard to talk about. When I say that is a hard to talk subject is because this topic needs an open mind and tolerance to the points of view transgender people might have. Is it difficult to do it? Yes. It could be difficult because each person has his or her own thoughts, culture and moral ideas of the argument.

We are vulnerable to do and say all the wrong things when we talk about transgender people: “He is sick,” “She is crazy,” “They don’t know what they are doing with their lives”. However, acceptance and respect is very important in this topic because these people want to be normal in a world where there are different judgments and opinions towards this subject. Most people might start finger pointing as something immoral or out of this world. But in the end, they are people who are trying to live a normal life like us.

In many paragraphs, Jamison Green tries to explain the feeling and the type of life transgender people have to live. For instance, one man talked with Mr. Green, that once in a hospital he was discriminated because in his record stated that he was a transsexual; consequently, someone wrote in his medical record in bold red ink “TRANSSEXUAL”. In this world, we need to live with the diversity of people and show respect to them. Each person has a choice in their lifestyle and whether we find these things wrong we need to endure many circumstances because we cannot judge the people. You don’t know if in the future that same person you passed judgment on is the person that might save your life.

Certainly, these people live a difficult life. If a man or women decide that he or she wants to change his or her body is because he or she need to feel comfortable with his or her appearance. But many people ask: “where are the principles and moral values of this person?” The principles, values and moral of people who criticize this type of individuals show the ignorance of the world’s changes right now.

The discrimination and disrespect towards transgender affect the peace and harmony of the world. People who discriminate think they are right.. Sincerely, they are living in the wrong world.

We need to understand and be open to different points of view, but first of all we need tolerance and respect to address these issues.

Rizwan Ahmed, also known as Riz MC in the music industry, created controversy a song that he wrote. Rizwan Ahmed was educated at Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics which he had analyzed and critized the issues that in the world was happening. On 2006 he created his first hip-hop single, under the name Riz MC, called “Post 9-11 Blues.” This song is a controversial satire which he shows his feelings about after the 9/11 that was provisionally banned in British music stations because of the politically sensitive lyrics. This song is going to audience from 15 & up who have knowledge of the 9/11 events because this is a complex issue that happened.

In this song Riz MC talked about how everybody around in the world was being with these individuals who are similar physically to Middle Eastern people. For example, he commented in his song “But if I haven’t shaved – they won’t sit with me on the bus.” He tried to critized when people would point at him or any Middle Eastern of being Ossama Bin Laden or any other terrorist from that group, everybody was scared and would call the police to investigate these people because they thought they were terrorists. Post 9/11 was a beginning of discrimination around of the world. For instance, he analyzed as a political philosopher this part of the music “Shave your beard if you’re brown and you best salute the crown.” He talked about the discrimination in the world Post 9/11 because of all the heavy scrutiny they had, as well as to salute the Queen (it is because he is in United Kingdom) because if you do not do this, you would be investigated by the police.

I think this rhetorical argument is very sarcastic to the audience because he, as a Pakistani descent, shows his feelings as well as of many people who are living this terrific situation of discrimination. This countries that had been affected with many terrorist attacks such as, United States of America, United Kingdom, Kenya, Tanzania, and others. We should know that Rizwan Ahmed has many points of view because he has a degree in politics and philosophy; he has certainly an authority in how criticize this type of issue that he with his song is causing controversy not only in United Kingdom but around in the world, specially in United States of America for his comments in the song. I think that each person as Riz MC can say an opinion that they want; however, Riz MC needs to understand that many people lost their families during those attacks and he needs to show sensitive for the affected families.

In summary, the song of Riz MC “Post 9/11 Blues” is a sarcastic critic to the governments and people who discriminate to Middle Eastern individuals in their countries. Rizwan Ahmed and many people of his ethnicity are living this intolerance that has had to know how to be patient to this issue that is affecting them for a group of people physically similar to them. Sadly, this is the real life that this people have been forced to life because of one person and his ambitious power had caused.

Caster Semenya is a South African runner who won a gold medal in 800 meters in the last 2009 Track and Field World Championship in Berlin, Germany. A young lady of 18 years old is having a gender controversy; many people around the world are saying that Caster Semenya is a man because of her physical features (facial hair, deep voice, and she has a masculine body).

This case is causing controversy in different age’s groups of male and women from 15 to 55 who are interested in sports and athletic events and understand this situation that is very difficult for any person. They are following this story closely since it is a very uncommon occurrence.

This argument is very serious because these types of comments affect the performance of an elite athlete. However, these comments are not just around the family, or teammates, or nation; this story is in every country of the world because of this event happened in World Championship controlled by IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations) who is doing some gender testing. In my opinion, the decision the IAAF took against her is violating her human rights. They could have been more discreet and respectful in working this case in private, not in public. This is an embarrassing situation that Caster and her family have to face. This argument appeals pathos because this video shows the feeling and thoughts of many people, especially from her native country, about this embarrassing issue. Also, this argument has ethos and logos when; for example, Caster Semenya’s mother showed a birth certificate to whomever requested it. She believes that the certificate is enough proof that Caster is a female.

The reporter and the information that France 24 Channel is trying to show us the ethos and pathos that the South Africa people are feeling because of this controversial story. They are trying to persuade to the audience with the real information that her family and authorities of the South Africa Athletic Federation is showing to the world. This reporter is trying to show these evidences because they want to be the first in show the “truth” of everything of what is happening as well as they want to influence with this information that this is real and they have true evidence that what is happening is not fair and truth.

France 24 Channel’s reporter as part of the audience who are interested in this situation is trying to find an answer to this prodigious athlete career threatening situation by interviewing important people in Semenya’s life as well as many authorities of the IAFF and the South Africa Federation. At this time, the IAAF is working on the investigation of this situation, the answer will be known in a few weeks.
